Motorised Satellite Installations
If you've found this page, no doubt you are tempted by the possible 2000+ digital and analogue channels available, and that can be found over the almost endless chain of satellites within the Clarke belt, and I'm pretty sure that unless you are an enthusiast it all seems very daunting with the vast array of available equipment. On the other hand you may already be well versed in the knowledge of all thats available with all the world news feeds, foreign language channels and hdtv.
A few questions for you to think about.......
Are there specific satellites or channels I want or need ?
Do I want a wall mount or a ground stand ?
Will I need planning permission ?
What is my budget limited to ?
Would a simple multi LNB fixed system supply the channels I need ?
An expensive fully motorised system does have a mountain of viewing pleasure, but is it practical in your location and do you really want or need so many channels.
I'm not saying this to deter you, but rather to help you understand the varied possibilities. In most cases people just want additional channels in their native tongue showing programming and news from home.
For example......
If you wanted to receive the Hotbird satellite for the Italian Rai channels and the Astra satellite for the sky package, but had little or no interest in the others available, a better and much cheaper option would be to use a single fixed dish system with duel LNB's aligned suitably to receive from both locations.
Hotbird is located at 13 degrees east........Astra is located at 28.2 degrees east, thus there is only a small 15 degree difference placing them apart. If your dish is around 80cm to 90cm you can obtain very satisfactory pictures. There are many types of fittings that will accommodate using both, in fact there are fittings that will allow up to 5 LNB's to be fitted at once. All that would be required is a receiver capable of supporting the channels and frequencies, and possibly a different decoder for specific channels.
Of course you can if desired simply use 2 smaller dishes and set up accordingly on the different satellites. More About LNB's
Moving on from a duel system, if it's really the massive amount of channels and feeds across the whole satellite network you want or need, a fully motorised system is a must.
On the LINKS page of this site you can find some of the more popular satellite system manufacturers detailing complete and partial systems. The range of equipment available is truly astounding and very advanced, yet having said that, a basic motorised kit can be fairly cheap yet immensely educational and entertaining.
The next thing you need to decide upon is how many of the satellites you want to receive from.
In most cases people tend to choose a high end package that makes full use of a H & H mount (Horizon to Horizon), though it is still unlikely that the entire range of satellites will be received, at least not of a good quality. The reason being that a few of these satellites are very low on the horizon at the end limits of the dish movements, thus unless your dish is of the particularly ENORMOUS variety they are very hard to view. Usually the full range is only required by the satellite enthusiast who will often use dish sizes in excess of 2 meters.
In the UK and particularly within my locality ( see map), a 1.2 meter dish is usually enough to supply a good quality signal from the majority of satellites and feeds available. Obviously there are larger dishes available should you require them, but it is rare that anything of a size beyond a 1.6 meter would be needed except for specialist viewing.
MOUNTINGS
With a dish of 1 meter or above we recommend you use a ground mount such as a tripod type or a fixed pole securely concreted into the ground.
There are two reasons for this.
1. A large dish "WILL" always find the typical high winds we get from time to time, and if mounted on the side of your house could easily create severe structural problems and damage resulting in much more expense to yourself and even possible injury.
2. It is highly likely that you would need planning permission for an object of such a size to be mounted to your house, not to mention the fuss some neighbours may create.
If you really want a motorised mount attached to your property we would recommend a dish size of 80cm and a high quality LNB. With most of the available satellites it will prove to be adequate (though not perfect), and usually would not need planning permission unless your dwelling is a listed building, or located in a place where it would be deemed unsightly such as a conservation area. Also bare in mind, ANY wall mounted large dish, particularly motorised does need very strong mounting brackets, anything less and your asking for trouble.
From personal experience a low level, discretely placed, larger dish size like a 1.2 meter or greater always proves best, it is always much more secure and safe, and is easily maintained with a minimum of fuss and expense. We also recommend that any large dish you may purchase is of a non solid type, unless you intend to ground mount it, as this too will help alleviate pressure where high winds may cause a problem. However, the choice is yours.
As a final note, if your choice of dish is to be the larger type, we would recommend an Actuator arm system for directional movement. This is simply because the way in which they are fitted increases the stability of the dish in high winds.
A fixed Motor Mount does not help the stability because all the strength and resistance is central to the dish rather than spread over a larger area, hence high winds can create a lot of pressure on the fittings. However, if your location is well shielded from the wind a Motor Mount may prove more accurate and simpler to maintain.
